What is X% of Y?
Find a percentage amount step by step
- Enter the percentage as a number: use 15 for 15%, or 2.5 for 2.5%.
- Enter the number that the percentage applies to.
- Select Calculate Percentage. The result is the percentage amount, in the same units as your original number.
The method is percentage amount = percentage ÷ 100 × number. The calculator answers “What is X% of Y?” It does not automatically calculate a final sale price or a percentage increase.
From a discount to the amount you pay
A product priced at 240 with a 15% discount has a discount amount of 36. Subtract that result from the original price: 240 − 36 = 204. For a 15% surcharge, add it instead: 240 + 36 = 276. Confusing the percentage amount with the final price is a common mistake.
Percentages with different starting points
If a price rises from 80 to 100, the increase is 20 ÷ 80 × 100 = 25%. Returning from 100 to 80 is a 20% decrease because the starting amount is now 100. To find what share 30 is of 120, use 30 ÷ 120 × 100 = 25%. These are different questions from the calculation in the form above.
Percentage questions
Should I type 15 or 0.15 for fifteen percent?
Type 15. Entering 0.15 asks for 0.15%, which is one hundredth of 15%.
Can a percentage be greater than 100?
Yes. For example, 125% of 80 is 100. A percentage above 100 gives more than the original number.
Can I calculate decimal percentages or zero?
Yes. 2.5% of 800 is 20, and 0% of any finite number is 0. Use a decimal point when entering fractional values.
Does subtracting a tax percentage remove included VAT?
No. Removing included VAT requires division by 1 plus the rate expressed as a decimal. Use the VAT Calculator for that calculation.
