Image Compressor

Compress JPG, PNG and WEBP images directly in your browser. Adjust image quality, compare the original and compressed file sizes, then download the smaller image.

Note: browser quality control mainly affects JPG and WEBP. PNG compression may not change much because PNG is lossless.

Choose a useful starting setting

  1. Select a JPG, PNG or WebP image.
  2. For a photograph, start with JPG or WebP at the default 80% quality.
  3. Select Compress Image, compare the original and output sizes, and inspect the preview.
  4. Lower the quality if needed and repeat. Download the version that meets your size and quality needs.

Work toward an upload limit

If a form accepts files below 500 KB, a 1.8 MB photograph may need both fewer pixels and lower encoding quality. First try compression. If the result is still too large or fine details become blurred, use the Image Resizer to reduce unnecessary dimensions, then compress that copy. The tool reports the result; it does not promise an exact target size.

What the quality slider means

80% is an encoder quality setting, not a promise of an 80% size reduction or a precise measure of visual quality. The slider affects JPG and WebP output. Browser PNG encoding is lossless and does not use this slider in the same way. An already-efficient file can become larger after conversion.

The pixel dimensions stay the same. JPG output replaces transparent areas with white, while PNG and supported WebP can retain transparency. Repeated lossy compression can add artefacts around text and sharp edges, so start again from the original for each comparison.

Compression questions

Which format should I choose for a logo?

PNG is useful for sharp graphics and transparency. WebP may reduce size if the destination supports it. Inspect small lettering and edges before choosing.

Why is the “saved” amount missing?

The output was not smaller than the original. The result says that the setting did not reduce file size; keep the smaller original if it already meets your needs.

Will it keep EXIF information or animation?

The tool redraws a still image on a canvas. Do not rely on it to retain camera metadata, animation frames or all colour-profile information.

Can it compress several images together?

The current form processes one selected image at a time. Download the result before moving on to the next image.

Privacy and format conversion

Image processing happens on your device in the browser. For a straightforward format change, see the Image Converter. Keep original images and check the downloaded file before replacing them.
