Password Strength Checker
Test how strong your password really is. Type a password to get an instant 0-4 strength score with a color-coded bar, an estimated crack time, and concrete tips to make it stronger. Your password never leaves your browser – it is analyzed locally and never sent anywhere.
Strength: –
How to Use the Password Strength Checker
- Type the password you want to test. Nothing is transmitted – the check runs entirely on your device.
- Watch the strength bar fill and change color from red (very weak) to green (very strong) as you type.
- Read the crack-time estimate: how long an offline brute-force attack would need at 10 billion guesses per second.
- Follow the tips list – each tip targets a specific weakness in your password.
- Toggle Show password if you want to see what you typed.
Practical example
You type “sunshine2024” and get a Weak score with a crack time of minutes – plus tips to add uppercase letters and symbols. Change it to “Sunshine-2024-Coffee!” and the score jumps to Very strong with a crack time measured in centuries. Same memorable words, vastly harder to crack.
Key features and benefits
- Instant scoring: 0-4 scale based on length, character variety, and unpredictability.
- Common-password detection: instantly flags the 20 most abused passwords like “password” and “123456”.
- Crack-time estimate: translates math into plain language – seconds, years, or centuries.
- Actionable tips: every suggestion maps to a missing ingredient.
- Fully private: your password is never uploaded, logged, or stored.
Limitations
The score measures resistance to brute-force guessing, not overall account security – phishing and database leaks bypass even strong passwords, so enable two-factor authentication wherever it matters. Crack times assume an offline attack at 10 billion guesses per second; online login forms are far slower (and usually lock out attackers). Never test a password you already use somewhere important on any website, including this one – generate fresh ones with a password manager instead.
Frequently asked questions
- Is it safe to type my real password here? The check runs entirely in your browser and nothing is transmitted, but as a rule never test a password you actively use – test a candidate, then decide.
- What score should I aim for? Strong (3) is a solid minimum; Very strong (4) with 12+ characters is ideal for important accounts.
- Why does length matter more than symbols? Each extra character multiplies the guesses an attacker needs. A long phrase of plain words usually beats a short, complex jumble – ideally use both.
