For a document limit, paste only the text the recipient includes in the count. Titles, references, footnotes and captions may be treated differently by a school, publisher or submission form.
A small example you can verify
Enter Hello world. This is a test! with no extra spaces. The result is 6 words, 28 characters, 2 sentences and 1 min. The reading estimate rounds up, so a short passage still shows one minute. A 450-word passage shows three minutes at the tool’s 200-word-per-minute estimate.
What changes the counts?
Words are whitespace-separated groups. Multiple spaces and line breaks separate words without creating extra ones; well-made counts as one group, while well made counts as two. Characters include spaces, punctuation and line breaks. Emoji and some combined characters may count as more than one unit because the browser measures JavaScript text units.
Sentences are estimated from runs of . ! ? followed by whitespace or the end of the text. A sentence without ending punctuation may show zero, while abbreviations can raise the count. This is a quick estimate, not a grammar analysis.
Word-count questions
Why is the count different from Word or Google Docs?
Other editors may handle hyphens, symbols, footnotes and punctuation differently. For an assessed or submitted document, use the destination’s counting rule as the final reference.
Does this count Chinese or Japanese words reliably?
It does not perform language-specific word segmentation. Text without spaces can be counted as one group even when it contains many words.
Is reading time suitable for a speech?
It is a rough reading estimate. Speaking speed, pauses and audience interaction can change the duration substantially; time a rehearsal for a speech.
Can I upload a document?
This tool accepts pasted or typed text. It does not extract text from Word files, PDFs or images.
