VAT Calculator

Calculate VAT quickly. Add VAT to a net amount or remove VAT from a VAT-inclusive amount using any VAT rate.

Choose the correct starting amount

  1. Enter an amount and the VAT percentage applicable to the transaction.
  2. Select Add VAT to amount if the amount is before VAT, or Remove VAT from VAT-inclusive amount if it already includes VAT.
  3. Select Calculate VAT to see the net amount, VAT amount and gross total.

The default percentage is an editable starting value. This tool does not look up a country's current rates or decide whether a supply is taxable.

Check an invoice both ways

Using an illustrative rate of 15%, a net amount of 1,000 produces VAT of 150 and a gross amount of 1,150. Now enter 1,150, keep 15%, and select Remove VAT. The result returns 1,000 net and 150 VAT.

Subtracting 15% of 1,150 would subtract 172.50 and give the wrong net amount. The tax was calculated on the net price, not on the already-taxed total.

VAT calculation methods

Add: VAT = net × rate ÷ 100; gross = net + VAT.

Remove: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100); VAT = gross − net. You can also find the included VAT directly as gross × rate ÷ (100 + rate).

Displayed monetary amounts are rounded to two decimal places. An invoice system may round each line separately, so a whole-invoice calculation can differ slightly from the sum of rounded lines.

VAT questions

Can I use another currency?

Yes. The arithmetic has no currency conversion. Keep all amounts in the same currency and interpret the result in that currency.

What happens with a zero rate?

The VAT amount is zero and net equals gross. The tool does not determine whether zero rating or exemption is legally applicable.

Can I calculate different rates on one invoice?

Calculate each group of items at its applicable rate separately. One calculation applies one percentage to the entire entered amount.

Is the VAT amount the tax I must pay?

Not necessarily. Tax payable may depend on input tax, adjustments and the rules that apply to you. This is an arithmetic tool, not a tax-return calculation.
